Nomenclature and Formulas

There are two main types of compounds:  ionic compounds and covalent compounds.  There are different rules for writing names and formulas for the two types of compounds.

Being able to name compounds and write formulas is a crucial skill for any chemistry student.  The following links will help you learn the rules for the different types of compounds:

There is another type of compound that you will also be asked to name and write formulas for:  acids.  Technically, an acid is an ionic compound in which the H has a +1 charge and is acting like the metal.  You can tell that the formula of a given compound  is an acid because hydrogen will be written first in the formula.  Acids may be ionic compounds, but there are unique rules for naming and writing formulas for acids:
