There are two main types of compounds: ionic compounds and covalent compounds. There are different rules for writing names and formulas for the two types of compounds.
If you think that you already have the rules down and just want to practice writing formulas and naming compounds click here to go try some problems. If you need more help with the rules for names and formulas keep reading and use the links below! 🙂
Use the links below to learn about the bonding and properties of ionic compounds vs. covalent compounds.
Ionic Compounds (Metal + Nonmetal)
Covalent Compounds (Nonmetal + Nonmetal)
Being able to name compounds and write formulas is a crucial skill for any chemistry student. The following links will help you learn the rules for the different types of compounds:

Writing formulas for covalent compounds
There is another type of compound that you will also be asked to name and write formulas for: acids. Technically, an acid is an ionic compound in which the H has a +1 charge and is acting like the metal. You can tell that the formula of a given compound is an acid because hydrogen will be written first in the formula. Acids may be ionic compounds, but there are unique rules for naming and writing formulas for acids:
Here is another video that explains the naming for different types of compounds:
